New computing technologies will reshape business

As Moore’s Law comes to an end and more machines connect to the Internet of Things, enterprises are adapting to incorporate innovative technologies and learn new computing paradigms.

We are in the throes of a computing revolution destined to change how we live, work and govern. Never before has history seen the speed at which change is occurring, and the future is going to belong to the fast. In the last three years, we’ve created 90 percent of all the information ever generated by the human race — a pace that will only accelerate as Moore’s Law comes to an end, as more machines connect to the Internet of Things and as companies develop new technologies to help create, store and make sense of this torrent of data.

Digital transformation is built around a cascading set of innovations that dramatically improve the productivity of modern business. Here, organizational theorist and management consultant Geoffrey Moore explains how the cascade works, starting with cloud computing and mobile computing, which allow free, one-to-one connections with virtually everyone on the planet. The next layer is social networking, which enables enterprises to enlist people to collaborate in their efforts.

Memory-driven computing. Photonics research. Neural-network technology. Quantum computers. The future holds all of these and more. Humans and machines will evolve their relationships, leading to workforces that capitalize on both types of intelligence. The real and virtual worlds will blur, prompting interactions previously limited to the realm of science fiction. Security will no longer be an afterthought, as technologies will resemble biological immune systems rather than walled gardens. The organizations that will succeed in the future will need to focus on platforms and partnerships that create real value. They’ll have to leverage cross-disciplinary human intelligence in parallel with machine technology. And they’ll be required to optimize their individual ecosystems to take advantage of current and future developments
