NURTW promises to subsidize transport fare to electorates nationwide

By Ukpono Ukpong, Abuja

In a bid to lessen the severity of the effect caused by the postponement of the general elections on Nigerians, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has promised to subsidise the cost of transportation in favour of voters who would travel back to carry out their civic duty on the rescheduled date by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement signed by its National President, Alhaji Najeem Yasin, and made available to Daily Times, the union with structures in the 774 local governments and operating in all motor parks across the federation, expressed concerns on the plight of Nigerians with respect to the unfortunate postponement of the elections. “We wish to sympathise with all Nigerians with respect to the unfortunate postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections hours before the commencement of voting. “Without doubt, this last minute postponement will certainly have an impact on voter participation many of whom travelled far and near places to exercise their franchise. “NURTW herby pledges to subsidise cost of transportation in favour of such voters wishing to go back to their respective voting units to cast their votes.” To this end, Alhaji Yasin, assured Nigerians that NURTW will make a definite statement regarding the nature of the subsidy to be provided as soon as the Union concludes consultations with members of the union’s National Executive Council within the next few days.
