Your appointments should reflect federal character, Falana tells Buhari

Falana in a statement on Wednesday reacting to President Buhari’s New Year massage hailed the President for declaring openly that he will not be seeking a third term.

Recalled that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria had said that President Muhammdu Buhari’s third term agenda started in September 2019.

Falana had said: “The third term agenda for President Muhammadu Buhari kicked off on September 21, 2019 under the auspices of “Movement For the Approval Of Buhari Third Term,” “

He also said: ‘The members of the group who launched the campaign in Abuja were not harassed by the Police or the State Security Service. The Presidency did not deem it fit to disown or dissociate itself from the campaign.’

But Buhari in the New Year message to Nigerians reiterated that he ‘will be standing down in 2023 and will not be available in any future elections.’

Buhari maintained that his administration’s actions would be governed by the rule of law as well as engagement with well-meaning leaders and citizens to promote dialogue, partnership and understanding.

Buhari said: “I salute the commitment of the millions who voted in peace last February and of those leaders who contested for office vigorously but fairly, submitting to the authority of the electorate, the Independent National Electoral Commission and judicial process.

“I understand very well the frustrations our system has in the past triggered. I will be standing down in 2023 and will not be available in any future elections.

Falana said : “It is good that President Buhari has disowned the group”,

“However, the political space should be liberalized without any harassment.”

“All court orders should be complied with.

“The DSS, police and other security agencies should release hundreds that are being detained without trial.

” The impunity displayed through total disregard of the Constitution and other laws should stop.

“All public officers whose terms of office have expired should be retired.

“All new appointments should reflect federal character in line with the provisions of the Constitution”,

“With 70 per cent of the budget for recurrent expenditure and 25 per cent for debt servicing the projects referred to by President Buhari will not be funded.”
