…says Obi fabricating allegations to attract public sympathy

The All Progressives Congress, APC has denied that it’s spokesman, Barr Felix Morka did not in any way, threaten the life of Peter Obi, Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP in the 2023 general election.

In a press statement signed by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary in Abuja on Tuesday, Barr Morka asserted that Obi’s claim is, “malicious, false, and reprehensible,” accusing Obi of fabricating allegation in a bid to attract public sympathy and stoke political tensions.

Obi, had in a New Year message, Thursday, 2nd January, said he was worried over economic situation in the country, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, triggered threats against him and his family, saying; Morka had warned during a television interview that he, Obi would ‘face consequences,’ for his remarks.

However, Morka refuted the claim, insisting that his comments during the Arise TV interview on January 4, 2025, were misinterpreted. He provided a transcript of the interview, emphasizing that his statement was taken out of context.

Morka stated that his comments referred solely to Obi’s political conduct and criticisms, not to any physical threat pointing that; “Nothing in that statement constitutes or suggests a threat to Obi or anyone else.

“Obi must stop misleading Nigerians with false narratives and start offering constructive criticism based on facts,” Morka said.

The APC spokesperson accused Obi of weaponizing misinformation, claiming that Obi often incites hostility against opposing views and tolerates online harassment by his supporters.

He alleged that Obi’s followers have frequently bullied and issued threats against political opponents, including elder statesmen.

The APC called on Obi to withdraw his accusations and issue a public apology, warning that he would explore legal options to defend his reputation, if Obi failed to retract the claims.

“To be clear and for the record, Morka did not threaten Obi, his family or those around him or anyone. Morka has absolutely no reason to, and has never, threatened Obi or anyone. Nothing that Morka said in that interview or any other forum remotely contains or suggests threat against Obi or anyone else, as the verbatim transcription of the relevant clip indisputably attests.

“Obi is shooting from the hip. He is not looking, he is not taking an aim; he just shoots wildly like what we used to see in movies back in the days in ‘Wild, Wild West.’

“He is not being rational, he is absolutely irrational in his thinking and in his commentary for a man who was Governor for eight years and left nothing to remember in Anambra State by way of legacy or transformation.

“He doesn’t have the wisdom, or smartness to change Anambra State; to make the State, beacon, example of governance in the country. But then, ran for President in 2023, and now that he didn’t win, he is sulking.

“Rather than get a perspective of what he did to lose so he can get better in future, he thinks that he can bring down the Government of President Tinubu, by being maliciously deceptive. That is wrong. I’m not someone to go on the offensive in that manner. But, Obi has crossed the line so many times and I think that at this point, he has coming to him, whatever he gets, he needs to manage it.”

Morka further stressed that, while everyone has a right to free speech, no one has a right to peddle misinformation or outright falsehood. The right to free speech granted by our country’s Constitution is not Obi’s exclusive right but a right that is available to all Nigerians, including Morka. He cannot disseminate misinformation and demand or expect that no one should disagree or challenge his false narrative.

“Ours is a democracy where every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation, is entitled to agree or disagree with other political views or opinions. More than any other Nigerian in this political dispensation, Obi has exercised his fundamental liberty to speak and disseminate his political views in person, in the formal and on social media,” he noted.

The Party therefore, call on Obi to immediately set the record straight, “withdraw his false allegation against Morka, and call his online supporters to order.

“Morka, stands ready to explore all available recourse mechanisms in valiant defence of his decency and impeccable reputation,” he added.
