Winners emerge in Chamberlain Squash Open

Action continued today at the maiden Chamberlain Squash Open holding at the prestigious Lagos Country Club Ikeja. The tournament which opened on Sunday with some qualifying matches is the brainchild of Mr Chamberlain Usoh who is the sponsor in conjunction with the Nigeria Squash Federation.

Top seeded players from the UK and Nigeria are participating including the tournament top seed, Tony Ford (WR 119) and Nigeria’s Number 1,Tunde Agbaje (WR 205).

Winner of the men’s category will take home a cash prize of $1850 (N658, 825) while the female top player will go home with N200,000.

Eighty nine (89) players are participating in the tournament. There will also be cash prizes for runners-up, joint third winners and tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

In Monday’s qualifying matches, 21-year-old Michael John defeated experienced “Police Machine” Jerry Ogujiofor 3-1 in a thrilling encounter to qualify for the main draws.

Auta Rebecca, in the female category dispatched Ogunyemi Idowu 3-0 in a one-sided match to qualify.

On the wide disparity between the male and female cash prizes, officials explained that they (the women) have not been participating in frequent tournaments to enable them to be properly assessed and ranked.

The tournament will run through August 21st to 26th.
