We’ll protect women’s rights – Delta Speaker
Reiterating the commitment of the legislature to ensure laws that would protect the well being of women were made, the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Monday Igbuya, Thursday assured that the house would expedite action on the passage of the violence in public and private life bill before it.
The Speaker gave the assurance when the Assembly complex played host to the advocacy visit of the Commissioner for Women Affairs to mark the 16-Day Activism/Commemoration of The International Day of Elimination of all Forms of Violence Against Women/Girls and Women Human Right Defenders Day held in Asaba.
Igbuya said that the House has from time indefinite, stood for the rights of women; hinting that most evident is the law passed in the 4th Assembly to curtail the menace of female genital mutilation and abuse of the girl-child.
While assuring women of the House’s stand on the protection of their rights, Igbuya, however, stated that it would be fairer if the protection of the male child is also held sacrosanct by members of the international community. In her address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Rev. (Mrs.) Omatshola Williams, said that the 16-Day Activism is a yearly international campaign earmarked for the elimination of violence against women.
She said that the campaign themed, “From Peace In The Home To Peace In The World: Make Education Safe For All”, is aimed at reducing violence against persons and to encourage influential participation of women and girls in peace building.
Omatshola said, “the cardinal objectives of the theme of this year’s event, which are peace, education and empowerment are also the very formidable and focal aims of the SMART Agenda of our amiable Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, targeted at achieving meaningful peace building platform relevant health and educational policies among the other achievements for all Deltans”.
