US envoy cautions Nigerians over 2019 polls

*As Reps seek repatriation of stolen funds

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington on Tuesday, cautioned that as the 2019 general elections draw closer, Nigerians must remember that there won’t be Nigerians without Nigeria.

Ambassador Symington gave the warning when he led a delegation to visit the House of Representatives (Special) Committee on Nigerian-United States Friendship Group/Inter-Parliamentary Relations headed by Rep. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.

He said that the success and survival of democracy in Nigeria will in a long way determine the survival of democracy not only on the continent but globally.

The US envoy commended the commitment of the citizens to connect with their leaders through freedom of speech and to have a say in the day to day administration and development of the country.

He advised that the nation must fight terrorism, promote economic integration and competitiveness.

The ambassador tasked Nigerians on peace, unity, togetherness, free enterprise not only in the country, but also to its neigbhouring countries, adding that there should be a connection between the leaders and the people.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee, Hon Agbonayinma had sought the ambassador’s assistance in repatriating funds stolen from Nigeria but stashed in the US.

He said, “We ask for your support Mr. Ambassador on the repatriation of our stolen wealth stashed in the United States by corrupt persons. These are proceeds of crime and they should be brought back for the development of our country.

“Nigeria continually seeks the support of the United States and other friendly countries to overcome the vices that pull our nation down. Majority of our citizenry yearn for one united country, devoid of sectionalism and nepotism, built on equity and justice.”

The lawmaker, however, pointed out areas the United States as a country has helped Nigeria to achieve it desired objectives.

He said, “The United States has been immensely supportive in conflict management, civic and political engagement and improved electoral administration.

“This visit is timely and will further strengthen the harmonious relationship that exist between the US embassy and the National Assembly.

“There are mutual areas of concern your visit will help to address which are fundamental to our two great democracies.”
