UNODC seeks sensitisation on Child’s Rights Act

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has called on the Legal Aid Council to sensitise Nigerians on the Child’s Rights Act (CRA).
The UNODC Crime Justice Prevention Officer, Mrs Simone Heri, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.
Heri stressed the need for family courts to rule on cases affecting children.
She urged the council to carry out advocacies for the implementation of the law as well as sensitised the states that were yet to domesticate the Act.
According to her, there is equally need to coordinate activities between government agencies whose activities touch on the rights of children, young persons and women.
She said there was also need to carry out sensitisation in schools, Churches, Mosques and social clubs whose activities touched children, young persons and women.
Heri said UNODC would collaborate with such government agencies whose activities impact on children’s rights.
She said there was need for training for all personnel involved in the handling of issues concerning children and young person’s bail, welfare officer, judges, lawyers and administrators.
Heri said there should be a robust strategy on remanding children and young persons, and advocated counselling of children remanded for one crime or the other. (NAN)
