WHO, UNICEF commend Abia on polio eradication

The World Health organisation, (WHO) and UNICEF have expressed their happiness with Abia State over its achievements on polio-free society.

Speaking when he called at the Government House, Umuahia, the State Co-ordinator of the and UNICEF, Dr. Linus Okoro, accompanied by the Commissioner for Health and management staff of the Ministry, commended the state for achieving polio free status since 2009, reduction of infant mortality, measles control among others.

He thanked the state government for providing an office space for the agencies, but said that they were challenged by non-payment of counterpart funding by the state, as well as non-conducive environment for storage of vaccines.

Responding, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu said the state was poised to give a lift to the health sector soon.
