UN says 1, 089 civilians killed in Syrian offensive on Idlib
More than 1,000 civilians have been killed in Syria’s Idlib region in four months since Syrian Government forces and Russia launched a massive offensive on the opposition-held province, an official said.
The UN Rights Chief, Michelle Bachelet, said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Geneva.
Of the 1,089 civilians that have died in the Idlib demilitarized zone and its surroundings between late September and late August, 1,031 have been attributed to government forces and its allies, Bachelet said.
Non-state armed groups were reportedly responsible for the remaining deaths.
Bachelet also reported that 51 medical facilities had been damaged in the fighting.
“I should not need to emphasise that these figures are appalling, shameful and deeply tragic,’’ Bachelet said.
“In a bid to take control of territories, there appears to be little concern about taking civilian lives.’’
She urged the battling sides and other influential powers to stop the bloodshed.
On April 30, the Syrian government, supported by Russian airpower, began a military offensive against rebels in the provinces of Hama and Idlib, forcing thousands of people to flee.
A ceasefire in the region collapsed in August.
Since then, the government forces have regained dozens of regions in the southern countryside of Idlib and the northern rural areas of Hama, which were under the control of rebels. (dpa/NAN)
