Two Delta communities seek FG, NDDC intervention over gas flaring

·
EKPAN and Uvwie communities in Delta State have sought the Federal Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission’s (NDDC) intervention in what they described as “worsened gas flaring in the areas”.
While both communities claimed they have suffered monumental disaster as a result of the continued gas flaring hazards, it also claimed that no fewer than three persons were feared dead in the last two weeks as a result of the effect of gas flaring.
The Chairman of Ekpan Development Committee, Chief John Enakireru, who confirmed this to journalists in Asaba called on the Federal Government and the Management of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to stop gas flaring in the areas saying that gas flaring has caused so much damage to the people of Ekpan and Uvwie in general.
Hear him: “It has shortened the life span of my people and it has led to serious environmental degradation.”
Chief Enakireru, therefore call on the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogora. to enact a legislation that would end gas flaring in Nigeria.
His words: “we are therefore, seeking for a legislation that would put an end to gas flaring which had deprived the people of Ekpan and Effurun the opportunity of enjoying an environment endowed with oil and other minerals” and urged the Federal Government to consider the health hazard of gas flaring on the people than the financial benefits.
