Taraba communities decry killings, others

Some communities in Taraba State have expressed dismay over what they described as incessant killings, kidnappings and armed banditry in their localities.

The affected communities Daily Times learnt are Nanguru, Barno_Kurukuru, Sabongida, Sansani and Gwiwan Kogi, all in Gassol Local Government Area.

Mallam Ibrahim Sabongida, who spoke on behalf of the communities, said in one week, 10 people were abducted by kidnappers along Sabongida, Nanguru, Sansani road stressing that Sabongida and BarnoKurukuru towns were attacked severally by bandits.

Mallam Ibrahim revealed that it was at the same location that the Proprietor of Winners Comprehensive High School, Jalingo, Mr. Danlami Shamaki was killed by armed bandits while a Civil Defense Corp Officer was also abducted.

He further disclosed that it was in the same area that three businessmen and two commercial motorcyclists were abducted.

“Residents in the area had abandoned their farms located far away from their villages because of rampant cases of kidnapping,” said Ibrahim.

Ibrahim also said many wealthy people and large scale farmers had relocated to Jalingo because of threats to their lives by bandits and kidnappers.

Ibrahim, who appealed for the deployment of security operatives in the area to curtail the activities of armed bandits, also stated that they have reported the matter to Security Agents.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Taraba State Police Command, DSP David Misal said it was not true that 10 people were abducted by kidnappers in one week in the area.

According to the police spokesperson, the command only received the report of the abduction of one person in the area.
