Sokoto Assembly to involve citizens in law making

Speaker, Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Salihu Maidaji said the eighth Assembly would ensure the participation of the citizens and the various stakeholders in the course of its legislative processes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Maidaji made the disclosure at a one-day public hearing organised by the Assembly’s committee on Works and Transport on a bill for a law to repeal road traffic law, cap 127, laws of Sokoto State 1996 and enact Sokoto roads traffic management law 2016.
Maidaji said: “the 8th Assembly has designed an eight- point agenda to guide us in strengthening our legislative procedures and practice.
“Part of which is to ensure participation of the citizens and various stakeholders in the course of our legislative processes, especially the NGOs and CBOs.
“This is in view to abide by the new global trend of inclusiveness and deliver quality legislation, as well as enact laws that will impact positively on the people in the state”, he added.
Maidaji also called on members of the public, NGOs and CBOs to objectively and effectively present verbal or written inputs in order to enrich the processes of passing bills into law for the good people of the state.
The state’s commissioner for Justice, Mr Sulaiman Usman said that the bill was timely and would impact the lives of people, as well as generate more revenue for the development of the state.
Usman said: “the bill contains 35 sections for effective management of road transport and has two schedules that include regulations of traffic management and punishable schedule”.
Speaking earlier, the Committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Sani Yakubu (APC- Gudu) noted that the “bill provides offences and penalties for road traffic violators”.
He said that the bill, if passed into law and duly complied with by the road users, would sanitise highways in the state.
While commending all the participants for their contributions, Yakubu assured that their inputs would be critically studied. (NAN)
