Set realistic goals for yourselves –Rector advises fresh students at matriculation

Fresh full time students just admitted into the Federal Polytechnic Ado–Ekiti have been advised to set realistic goals for themselves and see to it that the goals are achieved.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Taiwo Theresa Akande , gave the advice in her keynote address at the orientation programme organised for the 2016/2017 fresh students on Tuesday, April 28, 2017 at the Polytechnic Sports Complex.

The Rector, who spoke through Dr. Dayo Oladebeye, Deputy Rector, Special Duties and Revenue Generation, urged the freshers to make their studies a priority adding that “only a determined soul will get to the goals”.

While stressing that education is a vital to combat poverty and ignorance, Dr. Akande maintained that the Polytechnic remains one of the most fertile grounds through which the students could discover their talents adding that the administration had invested so much in terms of human capacity building and infrastructural facilities to raise the standard of learning in the Polytechnic.

She challenged the students to choose a vocation and pursue it especially as the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Vocational Studies provides ample opportunity for that, stating that education without one or two entrepreneurial skills is incomplete in view of today’s reality.

The Rector admonished the students to shun bad company especially the likes of “yahoo boys” and “Aristo girls,” adding that, “not all that glitters is gold.”

The Registrar, Mrs. Sade Adediran, in her welcome address, stated that the students were lucky to have been admitted into one of the best Polytechnics in the country.

She advised the freshers to lay a solid foundation for their career as the foundation which they lay will determine their success on campus.

Mrs. Adediran admonished the students to among other things avoid, examination malpractice, abide by the institutions rules and regulations, avoid indecent dressing and cultism, while wishing them remarkable success in their academic endeaviours.

The Deputy Rector, Special Duties and Revenue Generation, Dr. D. H. Oladebeye, in his paper delivered at the occasion titled, ‘Setting Goals for Yourself,’ advised the students to set goals that motivate them and which are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound; adding that goal setting gives one focus and a sense of direction.

Various Heads of Unit were also at hand to educate the freshers about the activities of the units and their relationship with the students.

Also, the students were educated on Drug use and abuse by the Nigeria Drugs Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) and importance of security consciousness by the Director of State Security (DSS).
