Russia’s coronavirus caseload jumps by record 1,100 amid quarantine

Russia’s reported coronavirus caseload jumped by 1,154 on Tuesday, the second record in as many days for the country, much of which is undergoing mass quarantine measures.

Russia has reported a total of almost 7,500 cases and at least 58 deaths, according to the official statistics.

Another about 185,000 people are under medical observation in the country on suspicion that they could have contracted the new coronavirus, a federal health monitoring service said in a statement.

About 800,000 tests for the new coronavirus have been conducted in the country, the statement said.

The outbreak, which has predominantly affected the largest city and capital, Moscow, has been reported in regions throughout the country.

Most Russian regions have followed Moscow’s lead in imposing lockdown quarantine measures, with residents advised to leave their homes only when absolutely necessary.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been working remotely, his spokesman announced last week, after a doctor with whom Putin had recently shaken hands tested positive for the virus. (dpa)
