No fewer than 50 wheelchairs have been donated to physically challenged persons by the Rotary International District 9142.
Making the donation on Wednesday in Enugu, the Rotary International President, Dr Barry Rassin, said that the wheelchairs would go a long to alleviate the sufferings of the physically challenged.
Rassin noted that it would also improve their economic drive to fend for themselves and their families.
“Rotary as a lead humanitarian organization pride itself in the services we render to humanity worldwide.
“We are doing a lot of humanitarian work, which cut-across various strata of the society i.e. education, health, empowerment, training etc, in order to make the world a better place for all to live.
“These wheelchairs are just one aspect of our service meant to promote the welfare and good of humanity especially our disabled brothers and sisters in this side of the world,’’ he said.
Rassin, however, commanded Rotary International District 9142 (in South-East/South-South, Nigeria) for donating $2,000 dollars for education worldwide.
“Your donation towards education will help Rotary to address some challenges facing education especially within Africa and third world countries.
“It will definitely check school drop-outs, dilapidated structures and lack of teachers in most local communities worldwide,’’ he said.
The President noted that the organization was working hard with its local and global partners in Nigeria to see that wild polio virus would be totally kicked out of Nigeria.
I must commend our district and local chapters for their efforts and financial contributions to see that Nigeria is certified wild polio free within the next few months. I can assure you that Rotary International is committed to that.
Addressing Rotary members, the president advised them to imbibe the four core values of the organization, which focuses on service and integrity, adding; “We are the only organisation in the world that has integrity as a core value’’.
He, however, charged the organization members to strive to increase the number of its members through clear-cut membership drive and positive humanitarian services in their neighbours and communities.
Earlier, the Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Dr Dan Ajawara, said that he was overwhelmed with joy as it was the first time Rotary International President is visiting the district and interacting with members one-on-one.
“It is history moment that comes a long while in one’s life time. Today we have our International President and his amiable wife, Esther Rassin, visiting the district.
“This visit had afforded various stakeholders be it government, donors, local and international partners of Rotary to meet and interact with the International President one-on-one,’’ Ajawara said.
One of the beneficiaries of the wheelchairs, Miss Ebere Ebo, thanked Rotary for the gesture and assured that she would jealously protect the wheelchair given free-of-charge to her.
Highlights of the event were the induction of 100 new members by the International President, donation of gift items to the international president and lots of group photographs with various segments of the District.
Rotary International District 9142 covers seven states, which includes Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo as well as Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
