It was fun and all round sport activities at this year’s inter-house sports competition of Cayley College, Agidingbi, Lagos. The event which took place at Agege Stadium in Lagos had the students participate in different sports activities like track and field, Long Jump, Shot put, Discus and march past among others. Speaking at the event, Chairman of the occasion and Chief Executive Officer of De Meros Group, Dirisu Amero, who was represented by Pastor Olawale Bello, said sport remains a unifying force all over the world regardless of race and religion therefore it is important for all stakeholders to look into it for all round development for the children as they proceed in their academic pursuit. According to him, the country’s curriculum should be in such a way that will enhance sports development in all the schools. “The curriculum should be in such a way that they will create avenue for the students to develop themselves in the aspects of sports.” He added that if government agencies can be available at sporting event like this and scout for talents and work on them, they can be great in the nearest future.” Amero, however, called on the state governments to partner with schools to encourage sports competition among schools so that great talents can be discovered among them as well to also build the spirit of sportsmanship which will go a long way in helping them to accept results during competitions. He advised the children to develop themselves in whatever they know they are good at before government, schools and parents can support them. “There is no substitute to hard work or shortcut to success, therefore be diligent in your academics and this will lead to success in whatever you do,” he said. The chairman also urged parents to support their children once they discover that a particular child has a talent because they can become the likes of all the people that are doing well today in world of sports and academics. The Executive Director, Cayley College, Mrs. Mary Iyayi, earlier in her remarks, said the school is interested in building a total child for a challenging future that is why they know that sports should not be relegated. According to her, it also helps their physical, mental and indeed emotional development because it gives them the chance to interact. “It gives them the chance to build good sportsmanship so in Cayley we are preparing them for a future that they can easily blend and definitely sports should be considered.” On how the school prepared the students, Iyayi said aside the fact that they have facilities for sports in the school, the management is trying to ensure that they take part in invitation relays and other sports activities they were invited for. On how the country is faring in terms of sport, she said the country is trying “but we can still do better.” The parents in their remarks after the event, thanked the school management for organising the event which they said will go a long way in building the students for sports activities. After the fun filled day, Green (Darwin House) won the event with 14 Gold, 12 Silver and 7 Bronze while Purple (Cayley House) came second and Red (Galileo House) came third.
