President Tinubu calls for global collaboration on sustainable development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to sustainability, calling for stronger global collaboration to address climate change and accelerate the transition to a green economy.
Speaking on Wednesday at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the president delivered a keynote address titled “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future.”
In his speech, President Tinubu highlighted that sustainability is a collective challenge that no country can tackle alone. He underscored the need for shared knowledge, mutual support, and unified action to reshape global energy systems and combat climate change.
“The fight against climate change is not merely an environmental necessity but a global economic opportunity to reshape the trajectory of our continent and the global energy landscape,” he said. “As leaders, stakeholders, and citizens of our planet, we stand at a critical juncture in human history. To succeed, we must innovate, collaborate, and act decisively as one global community.”
President Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s three-pillar strategy to achieve sustainability: Energy Transition, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Development. He emphasized his administration’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions while balancing economic growth and local realities.
“We have embraced a vision of sustainability that aligns with global aspirations while addressing local realities,” the president said. “Our energy transition plans prioritize diversifying energy sources and reducing dependency on fossil fuels by promoting cleaner, renewable alternatives.”

Further addressing environmental challenges, Tinubu spoke about the National Clean Cooking Policy aimed at reducing harmful emissions, improving health, and driving socio-economic benefits across Africa. He stressed the importance of working with local communities to mitigate deforestation, flooding, and pollution, which threaten millions of livelihoods.
President Tinubu called on partner nations, international organizations, and private investors to mobilize resources and embrace technology-driven solutions. He pointed to Nigeria’s leadership in issuing Sovereign Green Bonds to fund green projects, urging global collaboration to scale sustainable investments.
“To promote a Green Economy in Africa, we must integrate sustainable practices in all sectors,” he said. “These investments are capital intensive and require international support from partners and visionaries who share our commitment to a prosperous, equitable future.”
Commending the UAE’s leadership, President Tinubu praised His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his vision in convening a global forum on sustainability. The event gathered world leaders to discuss collective strategies for addressing pressing environmental challenges.
President Tinubu concluded by expressing optimism about leveraging technology, innovation, and international partnerships to create a sustainable, resilient world that benefits all.
