Police rescue 35 kidnapped persons enroute Kebbi

Operatives of the Niger State Police Command has announced the rescue of 35 persons being transported to Kebbi State by their abductors.

The Command disclosed that the lucky person’s who might have spent over a year in detention at various camps of suspected Boko Haram insurgents were rescued when the police intercepted the vehicle in which they were being transported.

The victims, who were taken from communities including Pandogari, Madaka, Allawa, and Sarkin-Pawa, were reportedly being transported to Yauri in Kebbi State when the police intervened.

The Public Relations Officer of the state command, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, in a statement said the victims were rescued along the Madaka–Makujeri road following intelligence lead.

According to the police spokesperson, credible information indicated that the driver transporting the victims was about handing them over to another group of kidnappers.

The driver, identified as Yusuf Abdullahi from Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, was immediately apprehended.

He confirmed that the driver gave vital information that led further investigations which are ongoing to uncover the full network behind the attempted re-kidnapping.

He added that the victims have since undergone medical screening and health certification and have been successfully reunited with their families.

Superintendent Abiodun said “more details will be made available as the investigation progresses”.
