Police raid criminal hideout in Delta, arrest suspected arms dealer, accomplice

The Delta State Police Command says its operatives have arrested a suspected arms dealer, his female accomplice, and recovered a large cache of ammunition in Warri.

The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, disclosed this to journalists on Sunday, noting that the breakthrough followed credible intelligence from the Force Technical Intelligence Unit in Abuja.

According to him, operatives of the Commissioner of Police’s Special Assignment Team, led by Julius Robinson, first apprehended a female suspect, Jamila Abubakar, at Conoil Filling Station along the Warri–Patani Road in Effurun.

“During her arrest, officers discovered a sum of ₦550,000.00, suspected to be proceeds from illicit arms transactions, neatly concealed in her bag. Her confession led the Police to launch a follow-up operation that yielded significant results,” Edafe said.

“Following the lead, the operatives raided the Niger-Cat area of Warri on 22nd October 2025, where they arrested Ahmed Ibrahim, 31, a notorious arms peddler from Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area.

“A search of the premises led to the recovery of 115 rounds of 7.63mm AK-47 live ammunition, 220 rounds of SMG rifle ammunition, and 32 live cartridges.”

He added that preliminary investigations revealed Ibrahim as a major supplier of weapons to bandit groups in northern Nigeria and a suspect long on the police watch list for kidnapping and armed robbery.

“He is also linked to the abduction and killing of Ogheneovo Onemu, who was kidnapped on 17th May 2024 in Ajaokuta Community, Ughelli North LGA, despite her family paying a ₦4 million ransom,” Edafe said.

The State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the operatives for their diligence, describing the arrest as a “clear demonstration of the command’s resolve to disrupt criminal networks and stop the flow of illegal arms in the State.”

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the police control room numbers: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.
