Pensioners recognise six governors, FCT minister on pension remittance

Only six of the 36 governors and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister will be honoured by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) for not owing outstanding pensions.

NUP said the six governors will receive awards of excellence in recognition of their role in the welfare of pensioners at its 10th quadrennial delegate conference scheduled for next Wednesday when they will elect leaders that will pilot the affairs of the union for the another four years.

This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by the spokesman, Comrade Bunmi Ogunkolade.

The union which is an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and oversees the welfare of pensioners identified the governors as Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode; Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun; and Jigawa State Governor, Abdullahi Badaru.

The others are Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong; Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, and Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam.

Ogunkolade said the governors have prioritised pensioners’ welfare and deserved the honour being conferred on them.

He said pensioners in the country would hold the conference to assess what the future holds for the contributory pension scheme and also set agenda for the federal government.

The conference is also intended to resolve how to tackle state governors who have deliberately refused to offset pension liabilities to the senior citizens.
