Peace Corps boss urges non-state actors to lay down arms, embrace dialogue

The Commandant General of the National Unity and Peace Corps/Nigeria Mine Rangers Service (NUPEC/NMRS), Dr. Chinedu Nneji, has called on non-state actors to lay down their arms and embrace peace through dialogue as Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 United Nations International Day of Peace.

“We call on non-state actors to lay down their arms and embrace Peace in Nigeria. He said

Speaking in Abuja at the celebration themed “Act Now for a Peaceful World”, Dr. Nneji said peace is more than the absence of conflict but the presence of social justice, equity, respect for human rights, food security, and a conducive environment.

“Peace, as we are fully aware, is not just the absence of conflict, strife and war but the presence of social justice, equity, fair play, respect for human rights and dignity, food, shelter and good ecological environment among other factors,” he said.

The NUPEC/NMRS Commandant General stressed that this year’s theme is a wake-up call for individuals, families, and communities to take urgent and deliberate actions in promoting peace, love, and non-violence.

“This year’s theme is telling us to act now and not later for a peaceful world. It speaks volumes for itself and we are encouraged to act likewise,” he stated.

According to him, peace cannot be automatic but must be deliberately built through the collective actions of citizens.

“The theme emphasizes the fact that peace is not automatic but rather the result of deliberate actions and efforts of the citizens. These citizens bear the brunt of conflict and war and therefore it behoves on them to act now and fast too towards building and entrenching enduring peace, tranquility and stability,” he added.

Dr. Nneji further outlined ways Nigerians can actively participate in fostering peace, including speaking out against hate, practicing respect, volunteering in community activities, verifying facts before sharing information, and promoting dialogue on issues of non-violence and cooperation.

He warned against the misuse of scientific and technological innovations, particularly artificial intelligence, which if not properly deployed could have adverse effects on society.

“Therefore, we must not only speak but act now against the negative aspects of the scientific innovations in the world,” he cautioned.

The Commandant General also linked peace to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that tackling poverty, inequality, and environmental threats provides a stronger foundation for lasting peace.

He concluded with a direct call to action: “This year’s theme ‘Act Now for a Peaceful World’ seems to have been chosen for our country because the challenges presently confronting us as a nation calls for immediate action! I therefore call on all Nigerians to ‘Act Now for a Peaceful Nigeria and the World’ at large.” Dr. Nneji said
