NUJ to partner DELSU in capacity building, reportage of breakthroughs

The Nigerian Union of Journalists, Delta State Council has expressed readiness to partner the Delta State University Abraka in capacity building of journalist to enhance their productivity.

Chairman of the Union, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu stated this when he led other executives and some members on a courtesy visit to the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Peretomode.
He explained that such partnership would be in form of training members of NUJ, Delta Council, promoting achievements and breakthroughs recorded by the University through media reports.

He stated further, ” as an academic institution where researches are carried out and new grounds broken, the benefits derivable from a genuine partnership between the NUJ Delta State Council and DELSU to the society cannot be over-emphasized.”
Comrade Ikeogwu noted that the visit had afforded them the opportunity to interact with the University Management on the best possible ways to serve society.

He said despites the numerous challenges facing tertiary institutions, compounded by the present economic recession, DELSU had singled out herself as one of the best in the country in terms of resource management, quality products, as well as the respect the institution commands in the comity of universities in the country.

Comrade Ikeogwu said, ”Worthy of commendation is the introduction of entrepreneurship course in the university’s curriculum. This no doubt equips her products with entrepreneurial skills and power them to become employers of labour at the end of their studies rather than waiting at home for unavailable jobs.”

The Delta State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Ikeogwu used the occasion to solicit the University’s financial assistance in sponsorship of a training programme for members on modern ways of information dissemination and also in renting a temporary office ahead of the completion of the union secretariate building in Asaba.

”The department of mass communication of this citadel of learning remains a very veritable resource centre for the actualization of the collaboration, and we are also aware that the department has a number of progessionals that can make up for a chapel. I want to assure the HOD that this present EXCO is seriously looking into that with a view to inaugurating a chapel there.” , Ikeogwu added.

In a remark, the Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Professor Victor Peretomode lauded the partnership initiative which he said the University will treasure.
Professor Peretomode represented by the University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Professor Roseline Aziza was full of gratitudes to the NUJ Delta Council Chairman Comrade Ikeogwu for recognizing the role the institution is playing in capacity building and also in making society better.

On the requests made by the NUJ Delta Council Chairman, the University Vice Chancellor said, ” I have also listened to the challenges you have identified.I can assure you that the managenent team would see how to contribute to help. ”
Professor Peretomode gave an assurance that the University would key into the capacity building partnership with NUJ through provision of enabling environment that will be beneficial toboth parties.

”The University is very focused to partner NUJ, and we also are very conscious of media reports. We hear a lot of things that the media report. Some of them we may be aware of, some of them we may not be aware of… I think it will help very well if we are on the same page before these things go public. You get your information, Sometimes,we have the fact you don’t have. Sometimes, the fact contradicts the rumour that has been given. …. I want to urge you that it is not everything that you hear that is true. When you are not too sure, please ask us so that we can provide the fact, that’s credible journalism…..”, the Vice Chancellor pointed out.
