NPFL: Bosso plays down title ambition

Head coach of El-Kanemi Warriors, Ladan Bosso has poured cold water over growing speculation that the Maiduguri club could emerge as shock champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season.

The usual big-hitters, Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Enugu Rangers, have so far failed to hit their expected heights this season, and with El-Kanemi Warriors in third place and currently three points behind surprise leaders Plateau United on the NPFL log, talk about an unlikely title triumph has been gaining momentum.

Bosso will, however, prefer to hear nothing of such talk, insisting that his employers have not given him any mandate to even finish in the top-three places in the division at the end of the season.

“In my contract, there is nothing that stipulates that I must either win the league title or deliver a continental ticket (the top-three finishers on the log get a chance to represent Nigeria in CAF’s interclub competitions next year).

“But as a coach, I have a target for myself.

“And that target comes in the shape of trying to get a continental ticket for the club,” he said.

Before matchday 21 cracker against Rivers United on Sunday, El-Kanemi Warriors amassed impressive 33 points from 20 league matches this season.
