The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced its plan to present the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The event, which will take place in Abuja, is expected to provide critical climate information for various sectors of the economy.

This year’s SCP is themed ‘The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development’, highlighting the importance of early climate information for resilience and growth in the aviation sector and beyond.

NiMet, as part of its annual mandate, predicts and publishes the expected patterns of climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature in the first quarter of the year. These forecasts are aimed at guiding the government and the public on weather, climate, and water-related issues, contributing to national development.

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the broad scope of the SCP. “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital weather and climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in sectors such as agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil and gas, telecommunication, tourism, transport, power, and water resource management,” he stated.

Professor Anosike further explained that the SCP publication would address the socio-economic implications of rainfall and temperature patterns. These insights are crucial for policymakers and stakeholders across various industries to mitigate risks and optimize operations.

The SCP will provide detailed forecast information, including the onset and cessation dates of the 2025 rainy season, the length of the cropping season, and the total rainfall expected across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas. It will also include temperature forecasts for the January-May period and health-related forecasts such as malaria and meningitis vigilance.

The SCP is regarded as a national document, attracting diverse stakeholders to its public presentation. Guests from the public and private sectors, development partners, non-governmental organizations, diplomatic communities, and farmers’ associations are expected to attend the event.

The presentation will also feature summaries tailored for policymakers and translations of the SCP in three major Nigerian languages to enhance accessibility and understanding across the country. Additionally, the publication will include the State of the Climate in Nigeria, a report that captures significant climatic trends and events from the previous year.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, will perform the presentation of the publication alongside its summary for policymakers and translations in three (3) major Nigerian languages, and State of the Climate in Nigeria.
