Nigerians Will Support ‘Intelligent’ Films Not Just Comedy – Omotola Ekeinde

Did Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde throw a shade at comedy films in Nigeria?

Speaking about her new movie “Alter Ego,” Omotola Jalade Ekeinde said Nigerians are bigger than comedy movies and would support an intelligent movie if it’s well done.

The top three highest grossing movies in Nigeria’s cinema history could be considered as forms of the comedy genre.

They are – Wedding Party, Trip To Jamaica, and 30 Days In Atlanta.

The veteran actress who has been on a 3-year break from Nollywood said this while answering questions on her box office expectations for the movie “Alter Ego”.

“I hope Nigerians would prove the world wrong that all we want to just do is laugh in the cinema.

“Of late, that has been the story, that, ‘oh you know, people just don’t want to think, people don’t want anything that would make them remember their woes or think about anything that’s happening in the society. They just want to laugh out their sorrows and go away.”

“But, I think Nigerians are bigger than that. I think we are very intelligent people. I think if you give them something that makes them feel good, and makes them feel intelligent and something that’s worth their time, I feel like they will come out to support it.” she said.

The movie, which features Adaora Igwe, a lawyer who specializes in defending less privileged abuse victims, is directed by Moses Inwang and produced by Esther Eyibio.

“Alter Ego” debuts on July 21, 2017.
