MOSOP condemns election violence in Rivers

Amaka Agbu, Port Harcourt

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has condemned the violence that characterized the suspended March 9 governorship and the state house of assembly elections in some parts of Rivers state.

In a statement by its President, Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara, circulated in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, MOSOP lamented what it described as the unprecedented breach of the public peace that marred the elections.

The statement said it was regrettable that two MOSOP officials, Mr. Dumle Mile and Dr. Ferry Gberegbe fell victims of the electoral violence in that occurred in Ogoniland on Saturday.

It therefore, condemned the shooting of its officials for no justifiable reasons and called on the authorities to arrest, and prosecute those responsible.

The Ogoni apex body, however, urged all political parties and candidates to respect the nation’s electoral laws and regulations, and use the established legal processes for resolving disputes relating to the electoral process.
