Man docked for allegedly raping 11-year-old

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State on Thursday remanded one Oyerinde Oyeniyi (28) for allegedly assaulting and raping an 11-year-old girl.

The prosecutor, Joseph Adebayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 14 at 3:00pm at Mokuro area of Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Adebayo said that the offences contravened Section 31(1) (2) of the Child’s Right Law of Osun, 2007, and Section 360 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
Defence counsel, Mr. Akinwumi Babatunde, urged the court to grant his client bail in most liberal terms, as he would not jump bail, but provide reliable sureties.

Magistrate A. A. Adebayo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Adebayo said that the surety must swear to affidavit of means and reside within the court jurisdiction, with an address verified by the prosecutor.
The magistrate said that the surety must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 8 and adjourned the case until July 28, for mention.
