Impending strike: Doctors to review demands next week
The National Executive Council of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) will on Thursday 12th through Sunday, 15th January, 2017 review the status of their demands from the Federal Government and take decision on the planned strike.
Speaking with our correspondent, the National President of the association, Dr John Onyebueze said, the strike has been put on hold, because of the scheduled meeting with the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole on Tuesday.
“While the NEC of our association would meet between 12th-15 th of January to review the status of our demands and take decision on the strike, we shall use the window and the grace of the extra 10 days to still explore all avenues of dialogue as we have always done.
“To further press home our displeasure in the coming 10 days (beginning from Monday), our members have been directed to commence to wear black ward coats and conduct 2 hours daily rallies/walk in their centres/states.
“Finally, we shall try as much as we can to ensure that negotiations do not break down from our side. We do not wish for this strike to happen and we do not also want the agents of government to cause this strike to happen.”
Resident doctors are agitating for a uniform template for the Residency Programme, infrastructure for tertiary health facilities, proper grading of doctors and payment of outstanding salaries amongst other issues.
