Health workers warn FG on indefinite strike

The Joint  Health Sector Unions(JOHESU) has warned the Federal Government to meets its demand or face an indefinite strike action.

The group made this call on Friday at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.

Speaking, Chairman of the union, Comrade Akinlade Temitope said, ” it is just a seven day warning strike,we are appealing to the Federal Government to bring it to an end by meeting our demand or face an indefinite strike action”.

He said  that the background history has been given internationally, health sector is always a team work, Nigeria is not an exception as far as health care delivery is concerned.

“When we talk about divide and rule, the Health Sector is been supervised by the federal Ministry of Health but when policies are given to favour a particular group or team, it creates a dichotomy and division in the sector.

He interpreted  JOHESU’s headship demand as  legal and  with  constitutional provision, an act established by health institution of Nigeria which made provision in the process of selecting headship, as the provision did not state that a medical doctor must be the head but the government claim to observe the rule of law.

He added that the Federal government should review the salaries structure and other welfare packages as they did to medical doctors as far back as 2014 and also acknowledge her responsibility by implementing the ruling of 22nd of July 2013 by Nigeria Industrial Court base on the provision of the law.

“We work in the same sector, we form a team to address health care delivery, then why should there be divide and rule, we have signed a Memorandom of Understanding on various ocassions. But the government have refused to take up its responsibility of the agreement.”
