Gundogan out to emulate Schweinsteiger for Germany

The Manchester City midfielder, who has returned to the national team setup after a lengthy absence, dreams of having a similar career to his illustrious compatriot
Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he dreams of emulating what Bastian Schweinsteiger achieved with Germany.
Schweinsteiger said farewell to the national team setup after Euro 2016, having won 120 caps and helped them win the World Cup in 2014.
Gundogan, who has returned to the Germany squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Czech Republic and Northern Ireland after a lengthy absence through injury, is seen as the ideal replacement for Schweinsteiger.
And the Manchester City man is determined to make his mark.
“I would be absolutely delighted if I were to have a career similar to that of Schweinsteiger, both at club and international level,” Gundogan said at a news conference.
“We all know what he has done for German football. It is an honour to be likened to him.
“But I am just trying to contribute something to the team. I want to enjoy the moment and be ready whenever I am needed. It is obviously great to be back.”
Gundogan left Borussia Dortmund for Manchester City ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and is loving life in the Premier League.
“The Premier League is the best league in the world in my opinion,” he added.
“There are five or six big teams fighting it out for the title. Demands on the players are very high.
“I am feeling very well at Manchester City.”
