FG releases N2.3bn arrears to universities, assures ASUU of sustained reforms

The Federal Government has released N2.311 billion in salary and promotion arrears to universities as part of ongoing efforts to address welfare concerns and stabilise the tertiary education system.

Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, announced the payment on Thursday in a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo.

He said the funds — processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation — reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to clearing inherited backlogs and boosting staff morale.

The minister also disclosed that Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) would be integrated into staff salaries from 2026 to ensure predictable and sustainable payments.

Alausa added that the government was finalising the release of third-party deductions and pension remittances to NUPEMCO, while additional funds had been provided under the Needs Assessment programme.

He assured that engagements with university-based unions, including ASUU, were ongoing “in good faith” and guided by fiscal realities.

The Yayale Ahmed Committee continues to interface with unions to address long-standing welfare issues, he said.
