FG partnering World Bank, Gates Foundation to capture poorest Nigerians – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed that the Federal Government is collaborating with the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to compile a data of the poorest Nigerians in the country before the disbursement of the N500 billion social protection fund.

Prof Osinbajo further stated that data from eight states have already been captured and that work was in earnest to capture the remaining 28 states and the federal capital territory Abuja.

He disclosed this on Saturday in Lagos, in a Town Hall meeting organised by the United Action for Change at the Airport Hotel.

According to Vice President Osinbajo, the N500 billion social protection fund will revolutionise Nigeria’s social security scheme, “a lot of people are wondering how we will determine the poorest who fall into this category, we are gathering data in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank to compile a social register and this has been done in eight states already.”

He said that his party the All Progressives Congress (APC), during the pre-election campaigns promised to pay N5000 to 25 million Nigerians who are unable to support themselves, he clarified that those who they had in mind were not the unemployed able-bodied youths but rather the unemployed disabled who cannot fend for themselves at all.

He informed the gathering that due to the financial dire straits which country currently finds itself, the government would scale the number of beneficiaries from 25 million to one million to start with.

Osinbajo however said that to cater for the unemployed graduates the government will provide direct intervention initiatives to serve as palliatives which will sustain the youths for about two years before they find befitting jobs in their areas of specialisation.

“We are going to provide temporary succour to 500,000 youths who after graduation from higher institutions are still wandering about looking for jobs, by training and employing them to teach preferably in their local governments for two years until they find jobs in their own fields.

“We are also providing technical training through technology hubs across the country to another 370,000 youths, because we recognise that technology is a very important spectrum for economic and industrial development,” he said.

He disclosed that the government was committed to making Nigeria a technology hub by assisting young people develop technology related skills  and providing various platforms for them to excel and meet investors who can promote their innovations, adding that about 100,000 youths will be trained on the CISCO platform.

He assured Nigerians that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari was committed to delivering the change his administration promised Nigerians: “The President and his cabinet are completely committed to changing this country – there are many issues we have been unable to resolve but we promise to be committed until our whenever our term ends to ensure that this country changes for the better.”

Vice President Osinbajo noted that the current biting inflation, perennial fuel scarcity and erratic power problems were birth pangs and will not be the end of the story, rather all will end well with prosperity and abundance for all Nigerians.
