FCT residents holds free cancer screening

About 300 men and women recently benefited from a free cancer screening programme organised by Gynae Care Research and Cancer Foundation in Abuja.
They were screened for cervical, breast, prostate cancer and Hepatitis B, as part of the organisation’s activities to mark this year’s World Cancer Day.
The week-long event included awareness creation and free screening for secondary school students, corps members and staff, and climaxed with free medical screening for members of the public at the foundation’s headquarters.
Dr. Onwufor Uche, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Executive Director of Gynae-Care Foundation, noted that each year, 100,000 Nigerians developed cancer hence the need for awareness and screening for early detection and treatment.
“We picked up several cases of pre-cancer of the cervix, several breast lumps and cases of Hepatitis B infection. Over 90% of those who came for screening were doing so for the first time,” he said.
He said that the NGO would follow-up on positive cases, adding that those with Hepatitis B infection were referred to hospitals for treatment.
