Ekiti organizes on-the-job training for workers

The Ekiti State Government has commenced on-the-job trainings for workers in different cadres of the State Public Service as part of measures to enhance its efficiency and productivity.

Speaking at a one-day workshop for clerical officers on registry management and organization in the public service, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Establishments and Trainings, Mr Sesan Alabi said the trainings have become necessary because “most of the things done in the public service are not taught in schools”.

Alabi who stated that the state government believes that training is a veritable tool for building and developing the capacity of public servants added that the series of trainings and manpower development programmes are organized with the aim of improving the overall performance of workers.

“Clerical officers have the institutional memory of what goes on in their Ministries. If clerical officers have not been doing their job properly, the mechanisms of government may not move smoothly as nothing will get done.

This means that the clerical officers’ cadre is very important to the running of government. The filing system and file movements are not learnt in schools so when a man is properly trained, he will be able to perform well”, the Permanent Secretary said.

He commended Governor Ayodele Fayose for approving the trainings; saying that this was a demonstration of his commitment to building a virile public service.

In his remarks, the Director in charge of Training and Career Management in the Office of Establishments and Training, Mr Kunle Adeleye said the department would soon begin the training of Administrative Officers and other cadres.

He said clerical officers who participated in the workshop are drawn from all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies across the State

Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Civil Service Union, Comrade Johnson Oladipupo commended the state government for organizing the training, saying that it would be an impetus for workers to perform better.

He urged the government to extend the training to other cadres and ensure that the trainings are done on a regular basis.
