Eguma downplays win at Ikorodu Utd

Rivers United technical manager, Stanley Eguma says his players will not get carried away by their 3-2 victory away to Ikorodu United in Lagos on Sunday.

Guy Kuemian, Chukwunonso Okonkwo and Wilson Andoh all scored in the first half to render Ifegwu Ojukwu’s brace academic as the Pride of Rivers won by the odd goal in five in an exciting matchday nine Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) contest decided at the Onikan Stadium.

Eguma reckons the win in Lagos was important but says his charges cannot be lulled into a false sense of security.

“It is not yet time for us to celebrate. This (Rivers United) is still a team in progress.

“Our sponsors and fans expect us to get good results and that is the objective of the players and coaches.

“This victory over Ikorodu United will not get into our heads and we intend to work even harder,” Eguma stated.

The trainer then took the time to discuss his tactical changes for the game against the Lagos club.

Eguma played three strikers plus two attacking midfielders for the first time this season as United ran riot and netted three times in the first half.

“It was a game we wanted to win so there was no point playing a conservative formation.

“We have players who can keep the ball, create chances and finish so there was a chance that we would get the win.

“We have scored in all but one of our away games this season but the problem has always been our slow start to games.

“We rectified that on Sunday and got what we deserved,” Eguma said.
