Delta spends N3.6b on DELSU Law Faculty, others

The Delta State government has said that it spent a whopping sum of N3, 613, 056, 248 billion on the completion of the state owned University, (DELSU) Law Faculty in Oleh and the health clinic at its Anwai Campus.
The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Engr. Jude Senebi, who made this disclosure Wednesday at a media parley with journalists in Asaba, explained that the successes of the completed projects and the ongoing ones which started last year 2015, was the approval given by the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, adding that 10 other projects were currently ongoing at the University.
Engr. Senebi said that approval was also granted for the development of two blocks of hostels (one male, one female), with each block having a minimum of 102 rooms, expected to accommodate 408 students.
His words: “we have observed in the recent times that many of students at the University have no hostels, rather they live off Campus, so the Governor graciously approved that building of hostels with both male and female blocks to have a total of 204 rooms and accommodate 816 students”.
On bursary/scholarship awards the Higher Education Commissioner disclosed that seven windows of opportunities for students to access the State Government financial support includes Students’ Special Assistance Scheme, Scholarship to Local, Scholarship Oversea/External, First Class Scholarship and others, adding that the Scholarship Board in 2015/2016 under review was the current payment of students who registered and was verifies by their institutions in 2013/2014 academic year to over 12, 000 students from 62 institutions with the sum of N250, 000, 000.00 at the rate of 20, 000.00 per student.
He said that the feat was as a result of the state government approval of the sum of N400, 000.00 for the scheme and the registration exercise for the next academic year currently in process, adding that of the N400, 000, 000.00 about N250, 000, 000.00 had been spent with the balance yet to be released.
According to the commissioner, “The sum of N37, 000, 000.oo has also been approved for the 2015/2016 academic session for which the exercise has started while awaiting release of fund”. Pointing out that the scheme covers students in undergraduate, masters, and PhD Programme-Nigerian University.
His words: “it might interest you to know that the state government gave N100, 000, 000.00 each to the 35 undergraduate, N200, 000.00 each to 104 master’s degree category and N300, 000.00 to PhD category, and it has paid all the beneficiaries of this scheme which started in 2010, and 2015, 40 PhD beneficiaries were paid their second trench from the 2010 PhD programme beneficiaries who are also expecting their final payment”.
