Delta Assembly seeks Okowa’s intervention in Amai/Ezhiokpor feud

The Delta State House of Assembly has sought the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s intervention into Amai/Ezhiokpor communities imbroglio with a view to ensuring peace reign in the areas.
At a plenary session yesterday, the lawmaker miffed by the continued fighting and alleged killings in the two communities, said the call became necessary as nothing good would come of crisis ridden environments.
Amai/Ezhiokpor communities are both in Ukwuani Local government Area of the state, and had been enveloped in litany of communal crises in the last one year.
But in a motion brought under matters of public importance by the members representing Ukwuani constituency, Mr. Alphonsus Ojo called on the governor to set up a committee of enquiry to look into the remote and inadequate crises of the mortal dispute between the communities and ensured a permanent solution to the dispute.
At the debate, Mr. Ojo averred that the two communities have lived together in harmony for recons as “one family” without any trouble until the land dispute which dismantled its relationship. Among other things, the lawmaker said was in 2009 the dispute degenerated into ‘free for all’ that left many people allegedly killed and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
The lawmaker disclosed that government was involved in 2009 and a committee was set up, and headed by the former. Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamine Elue, adding that the land in question had at present, appreciated in value while the dispute lasts.
His words: “in section 14 subsection 2 (b) of the 1999 constitution, if peace and security are not attained in these communities, the SMART Agenda would be falling” stressing that if urgent steps are not taken by the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and the state commissioner of police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim to wade into it, it might spell further doom.
Recall that the speaker, Mr. Monday Igbuya was on his way to Sapele in 2009 when he ran into the mutual exchange of fire in the communities, the lawmaker appealed to the concerned bodies to save the lives of the people in the areas.
Seconding the motion, the member representing Ughelli South Constituency, Mr. Ruben Ezeze said that he was opportune to be part of the entourage that bought peace for the communities, recounting his horrible experiences when he saw corpses at different, areas with missing heart.
He called on the House to as a matter of fact wade into the troubled areas; but member representing Warri South II, Mr. Dennis Omovie said the reoccurring crisis in the part of the state should be a serious cause for concern, adding that legislative businesses have seemed incomplete yearly without the mention of this case, recalling that a lecturer (name withheld) at the Delta State University was allegedly in the weak of the crisis.
The speaker, Mr. Monday Igbuya said the motion of the lawmaker would be critically looked into and endured the governor take steps to put an end to the crisis.
