CVR: INEC registers 100,588 in 3 months in Lagos, to commence second quarter July 30

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registered 100, 588 eligible voters in Lagos State between April 27 and July 20 under its Continuous Voters Registration (CVR), an official of the Commission said on Tuesday.
INEC’s Administrative Secretary in Lagos, Dr Mudashiru Mustapha, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the commission in Lagos.
Mustapha said that the CVR exercise was continuous, contrary to insinuations in some quarters that it was going to end after running for the first quarter.
He said the Commission had to stop the exercise in the interim to enable it to conduct some lined-up activities before beginning the second quarter on July 31.
At the stakeholders meeting, Mustapha told the participants, who included party chairmen in the state, to appeal to all eligible voters who just registered to come out and check their details in the ongoing display for hearing of claims and objections.
“The display and hearing of claims and objections has begun on Monday in all the 45 registration centres in the state to allow registered voters check and correct their details before the printing of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“Experience has shown that people, after registration, don’t go back to check and correct their details during this period of claims and objections, to allow the commission effect these changes properly.
“People usually wait till election day to complain about mistakes in their names, addresses, gender and others.
“So they should please come out in their numbers to check and help the commission serve them better,” he said.
According to the administrative secretary, the display of details of new registrants is also to ensure that the printed PVCs are genuine, flawless and correct for new registrants.
Mustapha said that the registration of voters by the commission for its second quarter, scheduled to start on July 31, would also end by October for display of list of registered voters.
“Since you are closer to the people, we want to implore you to appeal to all eligible voters who just registered to come out and check their details with us.
“We have promised to print the list of people who have just registered for the purpose of claim and objection.
“We want you to help us sensitise the new registrants to come out and check their names, in case there is any mistake. We don’t want complaints after this window.
“We appeal to the new registrants to come out and check their names, and if they have any claim, observation or objection, they should raise it in all the designated registration centres in the 20 LGAs and 25 additional centres,” he told the stakeholders.
Mustapha said that the commission was committed to delivering free, fair and credible elections in 2019.
“All our preparations are towards the 2019 General Elections. Whatever we are doing is going to be the best, and it is going to be better than previous elections in this country.
“On our part, we will continue to partner in terms of formation sharing with stakeholders to ensure success.
“The success of elections depends on information and proper communication,” he said.
Mustapha said the Lagos office of the commission would communicate requests and observations by the stakeholders that needed approval from the headquarters to the appropriate quarters for necessary action.
Mr Kola Ajayi, the Chairman, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lagos State, urged the commission to relocate one of the two centres not properly situated in Ikorodu Local Government.
Also, Dr Akin Badmus, the Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), said eligible voters were finding registration difficult in Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, and Badagry riverine areas due to inadequate centres
