Coronavirus: Reps recommend suspension of flights from risk countries

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the federal government to halt all flights from high-risk countries to prevent the spread of the coronavirus into the country.

This resolution was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion of sponsored by Rep. Luke Onofiok at plenary.

Moving the motion, Rep. Onofiok said that the seriousness of the coronavirus, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) branded a global pandemic, has so far affected almost 200, 000 persons worldwide and killed over 7, 000 in over 60 nations.

“Governments all over the world including nations such as Ghana and South Africa have adopted far-reaching efforts, where gatherings of more than 50 persons have been prohibited.

“Social distancing of at least three feet apart is encouraged, widespread use of sanitizers recommended and citizens encouraged to stay indoors with some cities and nations on total lockdown.

“In fact workers are encouraged to work from home while students are encouraged to study online,” he said.

The House member from Akwa Ibom state said that the Federal Ministry of Aviation and security agencies should immediately halt all flights from high-risk countries, especially the UK, Spain, Italy, the US, China and South Korea.

He however, said that Nigerians who come into the country should be tested on arrival and be quarantined if necessary.

Similarly, Rep. Onofiok called for the suspension of the National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Edo state, adding that virtually all sporting activities in the world have been put on hold for fear of the cornavirus.

In its resolution therefore, the House resolved that any other activity with a large gathering in the interest of the nation’s health and well-being should be called off till further notice.

The House urged all health agencies to work with governments at all levels to upgrade health facilities and remain at red alert.

In his ruling on the motion, House Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila mandated the relevant House committees to ensure compliance.
