CAN charges Buhari to give priority to security

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Kaduna state chapter on Thursday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to give priority attention to the security of lives and property of the people in his second term.

Chairman of the association, Rev. John Hayab, who made the call in an interview in Kaduna, said that CAN’s expectations were “that he should take drastic actions to address security challenges in our country.”

According to him, security is not just in the hands of those officially being paid to do the work as the real security is everyone’s business.

He stated that “our leaders must give us the confidence to believe them and partner with them to clear our communities of the activities of criminals and evil men. Nigerians should have confidence in those protecting them so that they will give them honest support.”

He advised the President to appoint competent people into his cabinet, especially those that would run the security agencies.

The CAN chairman who said the poverty level in the country is increasing, urged the President to come up with economic programmes that would empower the less privilege people to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor.

According to him, when a society has only a few privileged persons controlling everything, the tendency is that those who are hungry can get angry.

Hayab said that in his fight against corruption, the President should be seen to be sincerely doing it, adding that the President should in his quest to take the country to the next level work with Nigerians from across regional, religious, party and ethnic divide.

He said that in doing so, the President would be promoting unity and building trust among Nigerians.

Hayab said that operating in an atmosphere of trust and unity would make Nigerians live in peace and harmony and in an atmosphere devoid of fear and suspicion.

“Enemies of our country are exploiting our fear and suspicion to further create wider rift between us,” he stated and urged Nigerian leaders to conduct themselves in such a manner that would prove to the citizens that their “desire and appeal for unity is from the heart.

“Citizens will become more patriotic when they are sure that their peace, security and welfare are not politicised.”
