Buhari commissions CBN’s Centre of Excellence in Enugu

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday commissioned the Centre of Excellence at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, built by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Buhari in his address said that his administration was committed to repositioning the education sector. According to him, the lack of adequate funding to the education sector is one major problem that has continued to affect her over the years. “The population explosion of students and attendant dearth of facilities in the institutions are part of the factors that have contributed to the fallen standard of education in the country” he said. He however reiterated his administration commitment to reposition the sector to meet with global standards. “There is no doubt that education is the major tool for poverty reduction anywhere which is more reason why this administration will not rest in its resolve to revive the sector” he said. Speaking during the ceremony, the CBN Governor, Dr. Godwin Emefiele said that the dearth of skilled man power has undermined the resolve of the country to become the true giant of Africa. Emefiele noted that the Centre for Excellence was conceived as part of efforts to internationalise programmes, making them attractive and competitive to students beyond the shores of the country. “The CBN is a direct beneficiary of the output of the educational sector. “In our drive to produce a reservoir of skilled manpower, we have been able to build centres of excellence in the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka” he said.
