Boat driver, applicant docked for allegedly assaulting man with iron rod

Two men, Sodiq Moshood and Wasiu Suleiman, on Wednesday appeared before an Ajegunle Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly assaulting a man with an iron rod.

Moshood, 22, a boat driver, who resides in Ibasa Town Lagos; and Suleiman, 21, an applicant of same address; are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy, assault occasioning harm, to which they pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Olugbenga Salami, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Feb. 2 at Ijegun-Egba Satellite Town, Lagos by 7 p.m.
Salami alleged that the defendants accosted the Complainant, Precious Onwuka and threatened to kill him if he did not give them money.
“The complainant who told them he didn’t have any money was beaten by the defendant who insisted that he had but didn’t want to give them.
“They told him that he would spend his money on them today and started searching his pockets.
“In a bid to stop them, the complainant tried to run but Moshood picked up an iron rod and started using it on the complainant.
“He was injured on the left eye with the iron rod as he called for help. Suleiman struck him on the head and left hand with a sharp object before he fled,” he said.
Salami said the offence contravened Sections 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised)
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.
The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Erinle admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N80,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Erinle said that both sureties must be gainfully employed and adjourned the case until March 2 for mention.
