Ambode’s wife, others laud 50 years of women’s contributions to Lagos

Wife of Lagos state governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has paid glowing tributes to women of Lagos for their selfless contributions to the growth and development of the state in the last 50 years.

She made the remarks on Thursday in Ikeja, at a symposium marking Lagos@50 organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), with the theme: ‘Contribution of Women to the Development of Lagos State in the past 50 Years’.

According to her, the joy in her heart knew no bounds because she was confident that women in the state had played pivotal roles in the huge successes recorded in the state in the last 50 years.

“The theme of our symposium is: ‘The Contribution of Women to the Development of Lagos State in the Past 50 Years.’ Talking about contribution, I am at a loss as to how and where to start. Should it be from trade and entrepreneurship, public service, academia or politics? Honestly, women have contributed in practically all fields to make Lagos what it is today.

“To the glory of God, we can boast of many women permanent secretaries in the current Lagos State Public Service. We have a serving senator and many women political office holders. We have several women corporate titans; distinguished scholars and even a naval admiral, Itunu Hotonu, among many other women of Lagos State extraction.

“They have played important roles in building education infrastructure, in social engineering, in food security for the state through numerous markets dominated by women, in social enlightenment and electioneering activities, and so on and so forth. Who says we have not achieved?” She said.

Other notable speakers at the event included Senator Oluremi Tinubu; who spoke on the topic, ‘The Contribution of Women to the Development of Lagos State in the Past 50 Years- My Experience,’ while Mrs. Nike Akande, President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry, LCCI; spoke on ‘Trade, Industry and Investment in Lagos State: Why The Boom Should Continue.’

Chief Kemi Nelson spoke on the topic, ‘The Voice of Women in Local and National Politics- Then and Now’. Mrs. Oluseyi Williams spoke on ‘The Giant Strides of Women in The Lagos Public Service’, while Chief Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, Iyaloja-General; spoke on ‘Appreciating The Contribution of Market Women To The Growth of Lagos As Commercial Hub’.
