Akume urges Benue warring communities to halt hostilities

Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume has advised warring communities in Tiv land to lay down their arms and embrace peace for development to thrive.

Sen. Akume spoke while inaugurating two boreholes donated by Pius Akuta to the warring communities of Tsambe and Mbagwaza in Vandeikya and Ushongo Local Government Areas of Benue state that took up arms against each other over the struggle for a source of drinking water.
Represented at by the convener of Sankera Like Mind, who is also the immediate past member representing Katsina – Ala, Ukum and Logo Federal Constituency, Mr. Emmanuel Udende, the minister said it is unfortunate that people bonded by common ties and norms can resort to taking up arms against themselves during which lives and property have been destroyed.
He urged parties to the crises to as matter of urgency work towards ensuring the return of peace, stressing that he was willing to support such peace efforts.
Sen. Akume, regretted that over 28 communities across Tiv land were up in arms against each other, pointing out that fighting is fast portraying the Tiv nation negatively in the eyes of other Nigerians.
He commended the efforts of Akuta for sinking boreholes in the two council areas to address acute water shortage even as the occasion witnessed the defection of many into APC from various political parties.
