Adamawa govt declares emergency in educational sector
The Adamawa state Executive Council has passed a resolution that will allow the state government declare a state of emergency in the public education sector in the state.
Rising from the state executive council meeting on Wednesday chaired by the state Governor Mohammed Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, in Yola, the Adamawa State government said it has resolved to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector.
According to the Adamawa state commissioner for education, Ahmad Sajoh, who briefed the press after the state executive council meeting, the state government in that regards has also decided to establish two additional colleges of education in the state.
The state commissioner for education Prof. Kaleptapwa Farauta, speaking at the event organised by the Nigerian Union of Teachers in the state to mark the World Teachers Day celebration, said its declaration of emergency in the educational sector covering both basic and post primary, will allow education to be giving the priority attention it deserves.
She explained that the state executive council reached the resolution giving the dismal performance of the state in both give Senior School certificate examination and West African School Certificate Examinations of late.
Meanwhile Comrade Rodney Nathan, NUT state chairman for Adamawa State has appealed to state government to honour the agreement it reached with the union and offset backlog of unpaid salaries owed the teachers.
However, Governor Bindow, who was represented by his Chief of staff, Alh. Abdulrahman Abba Jimeta at the occasion, assured the teachers that the state government will clear the outstanding salary arrears, adding that it has paid one month already and hopes settle the remaining two months before the end of the year.
