Adamawa crisis: Police declare man wanted

The Police in Adamawa State has declared a 33-year-old man, Okonkwo Onyeka Tony wanted over his alleged involvement in the murder of one Mr. Mustafa Garuba.

He was declared wanted in a police bulletin approved by the Commissioner of Police in the State in August 2014.

It was gathered that the said murder is in connection to a recent fracas involving some Muslims and Christians within the Mubi Old Market Mosque.

Okonkwo, a native of Ugbodu, Aniocha North Local Area of Delta State was initially residing at Lagos State before he relocated to Adamawa State.

The Police has now asked the members of the public to help in locating the whereabouts of the dark-complexioned middle-aged man.

The bulletin said, “Anyone with useful information that leads to his arrest will be rewarded.”

Trouble had started when some Muslims wanted Christian traders to vacate a particular section of the Market.

However, the Christians refused to move, stating that the Market had been there long before the Mosque was erected.

The development led to the sudden attack on the Christians resulting in casualties on both sides.

But the police have now declared Okonkwo and some others wanted over their involvement in the crisis.

One of the leaders of the Christian communities in the area, Benson Edeth described the situation as sad.

“We only defended ourselves when they attacked us unprovoked; I wonder why the police should declare our people wanted. This is just part of the persecution of the Christian communities.

“They want to annihilate us completely but that is not going to happen,” he fumed.
