Abia Commissioner calls for concerted efforts over waste management in Abia

In furtherance of keeping Abia state clean, a call has gone out to Abians to collaborate with government in its concerted effort in refuse management.

This call came last Saturday environment clean up exercise in the state from the state Commissioner for Environment, Hon Aham Uko after monitoring the exercise stating that waste management is capital intensive.

The environment Commissioner said in the state, there will be concerted efforts to actualize that in the state.

The commissioner who was fielding questions form newsmen while stating that the state government is also positioned to manage flood water in Aba and Umuahia, will also gradually graduate waste management in the twin cities, to enhance the ecstatic beauty of the state.

“We need to constantly re-engineer waste management for a cleaner environment”, he said thanking Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu “who felt the need to intervene in flood management, and listening to genuine appeal of Abians” over dump sites in the state.

He regretted that while the state government is searching for areas for dump sites, described the dumping of refuse indiscriminately as another challenges that face the state and which is not appropriate, stating “refuse management is a challenging assignment.

According to him, efforts are on top gear towards finding alternative dump sites in the state, pointing out that the situation will normalize in the next two weeks.

Hon Uko disclosed that together with the Abia State Environmental Sanitation Authority, ASEPA, his ministry will look at alternatives sites in order to redeem the clean image of the state.

He also used the opportunity to state that the mobile Environmental sanitation court, which did not sit during the exercise, has challenges associated with lack of enough infrastructure and logistics, stating that after this, the court will be properly constituted for maximal functioning.

The commissioner expressed his happiness that the monthly exercise has come to stay and is continuous since he came into office, stating “there is improvement generally as the level of participation is increasing.
