Stakeholders push for real solutions to fast-track Nigeria’s energy transition

BY TEMITOPE ADEBAYO

In a bold move to tackle Nigeria’s energy challenges, the Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) is bringing together key players in the power sector to drive practical solutions for a sustainable energy transition.

Themed “Overcoming Barriers to a Sustainable Energy Transition,” the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Stakeholders’ Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2025, in Lagos. The event will convene policymakers, clean energy advocates, investors, and industry experts to dismantle the structural and policy barriers limiting progress in the sector.

While the federal government’s Vision 30:30:30 aims to deliver 30,000MW of electricity by 2030—with 30 per cent from renewable sources—implementation gaps persist, especially at the grassroots. CADEF believes distributed energy technologies such as solar mini-grids, battery storage, and hybrid systems offer a viable path to inclusive energy access, particularly for rural and underserved communities.

Executive Director of CADEF, Prof. Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor, said the workshop is designed not just for dialogue, but for decisive action. “We want to move beyond rhetoric. Distributed energy resources are critical to solving Nigeria’s energy access problem, and we need collaboration across sectors to scale what works,” she said.

The workshop will also tackle issues of financing, regulatory innovation, and market integration. CADEF’s Director of Programmes, Lovelyn Okafor, noted that the moment is right for bold ideas. “We are gathering stakeholders who can truly shift the dial—from investors and development partners to grassroots innovators and government agencies,” she said.

CADEF sees the forum as a springboard for action that can help Nigeria achieve energy security and accelerate the shift towards a low-carbon economy.
