How Najomo’s leadership transforms Nigerian aviation industry

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), a critical body ensuring airspace safety, has experienced a significant transformation under Capt. Chris Najomo’s leadership as Acting Director General over the past year.

With a focus on reforms and operational efficiency, Najomo has revitalised confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector by enhancing safety standards and addressing key challenges.

Najomo’s tenure has been marked by strict monitoring and enforcement of compliance among airlines, agencies, and stakeholders. His decisive actions, such as sanctioning non-compliant airlines for failing to issue ticket refunds, have underscored the NCAA’s commitment to protecting passengers and upholding operational standards.

Consumer protection has taken a central role, with the introduction of the Consumer Protection Portal enabling real-time resolution of passenger complaints. This initiative has improved transparency, expedited resolutions, and empowered over 260 Consumer Protection Officers, elevating the agency’s reputation and efficiency.

In addition to prioritising consumer interests, Najomo has revitalised staff welfare and capacity development. By clearing rent arrears, implementing overdue promotions, and providing essential tools, he has enhanced staff morale. Mandatory safety and audit training programmes have also resumed, further strengthening the agency’s operational capabilities.

Safety advancements under Najomo’s administration include the inauguration of the Flight Data Centre for analysing incidents such as bird strikes and runway overshoots, and the establishment of specialised units like the Quality Assurance Department and a division for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). These innovations reflect a commitment to maintaining high standards and adapting to emerging trends in aviation.

Efforts to address high airfares have also been a priority, with Najomo facilitating discussions with foreign airlines to unblock lower inventory fares. These measures have expanded travel options and improved passenger satisfaction, highlighted by the successful launch of Air Peace’s Lagos-London operations.

Najomo’s open-door policy has fostered collaboration with unions, ensuring workforce stability and maintaining timely salary payments despite financial challenges. By streamlining processes such as certifications and aircraft registrations, he has reduced bureaucratic delays and enhanced transparency, publishing certified heliports on the NCAA website.

With his strategic reforms, Najomo has positioned the NCAA as a benchmark for safety, efficiency, and innovation, transforming Nigeria’s aviation landscape into a model of growth and operational excellence.
